WHAT IS THE SHED CALLED OFFICIALLY?
We go by 'Hirwaun Men's Sheds' and 'Hirwaun and Area Men's Sheds'. We went by 'Hirwaun and Area Men's Sheds' when we started but decided to also go by 'Hirwaun Men's Sheds' to make us be easier to find on the internet.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
We chat about various subjects, make and repair stuff and take part in various activities. We are here to reduce the feelings of loneliness and isolation and to make people feel welcome and form new friendships.
WHAT IS A MEN'S SHED AND WHAT IS IT'S PURPOSE?
A Men's Shed (or Sheds) is similar to a garden shed to pursue practical interests at leisure, practice/develop skills and enjoy making and mending things. The difference between the two is that a garden shed is often solitary while a Men's Shed is more social where men and women of different ages can socialise, form new friendships, learn new skills, discuss interests and so on. There are different types of Men's Sheds with different niches but they all will have a couple of things in common.
Men's Sheds is also about reducing isolation and loneliness especially for older people with little to no social interaction though this occurs with adults of any age. Various projects and activities are encouraged and these can vary in each Men's Sheds across the UK. Men's Sheds are not just about being social, taking part in activities and learning new things, it's about having fun.
WHAT IS THE AGE LIMIT?
It is for adults of any age with 18 being the minimum.
ARE WOMEN ALLOWED TO JOIN?
Women are welcome to join. HAAMS invites anyone regardless of gender, age, race/ ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs/non-religious beliefs and nationality.
WHAT SORT OF ACTIVITIES ARE YOU PLANNING?
We are planning to do activities such as walking around the local area, walking football, swimming, make things (for example bird boxes) and going on day trips.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO DO IN THE FUTURE?
We hope to eventually expand into doing more projects and activities. We plan on launching video channels such as a YouTube channel to show our activities, projects and possibly other types of content.
